Deductions — most apply only in the old regime

HRA exemption

How much of your house rent allowance is tax-free. Old regime only — the new regime does not allow HRA exemption.

From 2026-27 the 50% limit covers Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad too (Income-tax Rules, 2026).

Advance tax

If your tax for the year, after TDS, is ₹10,000 or more, pay it in instalments during the year. This works out each instalment and its date.

Capital gains

Holding period, short or long term, and the tax — for shares, mutual funds, property, gold and more. For sales on or after 23 July 2024.

Interest for late filing & short advance tax

Old sections 234A, 234B and 234C — now sections 423, 424 and 425 of the Income-tax Act, 2025. Simple interest at 1% a month; part of a month counts as a whole month.

Advance tax paid — amount paid in each window

Counts as advance tax, but late for 234C.

TDS rate finder

Late TDS — interest & fee

Interest for deducting late (1% a month) or depositing late (1.5% a month), and the late-filing fee of ₹200 a day for the TDS return. Old sections 201(1A) and 234E, carried into the Income-tax Act, 2025.
